Yes, shea butter can go bad, even though some tubs (including some we sell) say "Shea Butter does not expire."3 It's a natural fat, so over time it can go stale, and a dirty, damp jar can grow mold. US law doesn't require an expiry date on cosmetics at all.1 Here's how to tell if yours is still good, and how to make it last.

Quick answer

  • Throw it out if it smells sour or sharp like old cooking oil, or shows mold.
  • Gritty or grainy texture is usually not spoilage; it's how shea sets after melting.
  • No date on the tub? That's legal; shelf life is the maker's job.1
  • Keep it cool, closed and dry, and scoop with clean, dry hands.3

The short answer: it lasts a long time, not forever

Shea butter is a fat pressed from the shea nut; about 85 to 90% of its fatty acids are stearic and oleic acid.2 Like any natural fat or oil, it slowly changes with air, heat and light. Kept well, a tub lasts a long time. Kept warm, open or wet, it goes off sooner.

"Shea butter does not expire"? What the label says vs the FDA

Our 100% Natural African Shea Butter tub:3"Shea Butter does not expire. Store in a cool place."

The U.S. FDA:1"There are no U.S. laws or regulations that require cosmetics to have specific shelf lives or have expiration dates on their labels."

The FDA says working out shelf life is the manufacturer's responsibility, and defines it as how long a product will "look and act as expected and to stay safe for use."1 So "does not expire" is the maker's claim, not a rule. Your nose and eyes are the real test.

4 signs your shea butter has gone bad

Sour or sharp smellA smell like old frying oil or something sour, instead of its usual smell, means it's stale.
MoldFuzzy spots, or green, black or pink patches. Throw the whole tub out.
New colorA tub that turns darker or changes color all through, not just on top.
It stingsIf it suddenly irritates skin it never bothered before, stop using it.

Using shea on your scalp? Cleveland Clinic notes that "yeast related to dandruff can grow in shea butter," so don't dip fingers from your scalp back into the tub.4

What's normal (and not a sign it's bad)

Grainy bitsSmall grains appear when shea melts and sets again. They melt on your skin.
Ivory or yellowBoth are sold. For the difference, see raw vs yellow shea.
Soft in summer, hard in winterIt's a butter: it softens with heat.

How to store shea butter so it lasts

  1. Keep it cool, as the tub says,3 away from the stove, radiator and sunny windows.
  2. Close the lid every time.
  3. Use clean, dry hands or a spoon. Water and dirty fingers are how mold gets in.
  4. Split big tubs. Keep a small jar for daily use and leave the rest closed.
  5. Hot summer? The fridge is fine; it just gets harder.

FAQ

Does shea butter go bad?

Yes. It lasts a long time if kept cool, closed and dry, but it can go stale or grow mold.

Does shea butter expire?

Many tubs have no expiry date, which US law allows.1 Some labels say it "does not expire",3 but check the smell and look before you use an old tub.

How can I tell if shea butter is rancid?

It smells sour or sharp, like old cooking oil, instead of its usual smell.

Why is my shea butter grainy?

Grains form when shea melts and sets again. That is normal and not a sign it has gone bad.

Should I keep shea butter in the fridge?

You don't have to. Keep it cool and closed; the fridge helps in hot weather.

Can shea butter grow mold?

Yes, if water or dirty fingers get into the tub. Throw it out if you see fuzzy spots.
