Product guide · Yado Market Blog

Whipped shea butter is real African shea butter whipped with oils into a light, fluffy cream that spreads like lotion and feels like shea. Our baby powder whipped shea butter is the best seller on our skin care shelf. Here's what whipped shea is, what it does, how to use it on your body, hands and hair, and how to keep it soft.

Quick answer: how to use whipped shea butter

  1. Shower or wash, then pat dry so skin is still a little damp.
  2. Scoop a pea-size to dime-size amount and warm it between your palms.
  3. Smooth it over arms, legs, hands, elbows, knees and heels.
  4. Use a tiny bit on hair ends to seal in moisture. Repeat daily.

What Is Whipped Shea Butter?

Shea butter is the fat pressed from the nuts of the shea tree, Vitellaria paradoxa, which grows wild across the savannah belt of West Africa.1 On its own it is firm, like cold butter. Whipped shea butter is that same shea softened, blended with a little oil and beaten with air until it turns light and fluffy, almost like frosting. Most jars, including ours, also add a scent.

Whipped shea

Soft straight from the jar, spreads fast, soaks in quickly. Scented. Best for everyday body care.

Raw shea

Firm, melts in your hands, natural nutty smell, nothing added. Best for sensitive skin, babies and DIY.

Yellow shea

Raw shea colored gold the traditional way, often with borututu root.1 Rich, great for hair.

Why Baby Powder Whipped Shea Butter Is Everyone's Favorite

Out of the 22 scents on our shelf, Baby Powder sells more than any other, by a wide margin. Customers tell us it smells clean, soft and familiar, like a freshly bathed child, without being loud or sweet. It's a scent men, women and grandparents all reach for, and it works as an everyday body cream you can wear to work.

One thing to know: "baby powder" is the name of the scent. The jar is a scented body cream for grown-up skin. For a baby's skin, choose plain raw shea instead (more on that below).

"I'm 85 years old and when I tell my age people don't believe me ... I've been using my Shea Butter once each morning."

Johnnie, Yado customer, August 2026

Other popular scents include Black Woman, Egyptian Amber, Mango Butter, Pink Sugar, Strawberry, Pineapple and Almond. Every scent is the same 8 oz whipped shea base.

What it does

Whipped Shea Butter Benefits

Whipping changes the texture, not what shea is. You get the same butter in an easier-to-use form:

Locks in moisture

About 85 to 90% of shea's fat is stearic and oleic acid.1 Rich creams and butters like shea help hold water in dry skin, which is why dermatologists list shea butter among good moisturizer ingredients.4

Softens rough spots

Elbows, knees, heels and hands that feel tight or look ashy after a Chicago winter day.

Comforting feel

Shea contains natural compounds called triterpenes that showed calming activity in lab studies.2 Researchers also review shea among plant oils for skin barrier care.3

Easy every day

No scraping or melting a hard block. It spreads in seconds, even on a cold morning, so you actually use it.

For everything shea does for skin and hair, see Shea Butter Benefits. Research on shea is still limited, so think of it as a great moisturizer, not a medicine.2

Step by step

How to Use Whipped Shea Butter

A little goes a long way. Start small and add more only where skin still feels dry.

1. Damp

Apply within a few minutes of your shower, while skin is still damp. That's when moisturizers work best.4

2. Warm

Take a pea-size scoop per arm or leg and rub it between your palms for a few seconds.

3. Smooth

Massage in, then go back over elbows, knees, heels and hands. Socks overnight help dry feet.

4. Repeat

Once or twice a day, and after washing your hands in winter.4

Where to use it

Whipped Shea Butter for Face, Hair and Baby

Body, hands & feet: yes

This is what whipped shea is made for. Use it daily from neck to heels.

Hair: ends and edges

A tiny bit on damp ends seals in moisture, as the cream step of the LOC method. For scalp care, raw or yellow shea is better. See Shea Butter for Hair.

Face: go easy

Dermatologists suggest fragrance-free products for dry or sensitive skin,4 so for your face, a little plain raw shea at night is the safer pick. Try any new product on a small spot first.

Babies: choose unscented

Despite the name, keep scented baby powder whipped shea for grown-ups. For a little one, use plain raw shea butter and ask your pediatrician first.

Care tips

How to Keep Whipped Shea Butter Soft (and Fresh)

It melted in the heat?

Normal in summer or after shipping. Put the jar in the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes and it firms up again.

Hard or grainy in winter?

Keep it at room temperature, away from a cold window. Warm a scoop in your palms and it melts smooth.

Looks less full?

Whipped shea is sold by weight and is full of air, so it can settle. The amount of butter is the same.

Keep it fresh

Close the lid, scoop with dry hands, keep it out of the shower. If it ever smells sour or off, replace it.

Do it yourself

How to Make Whipped Shea Butter at Home

Prefer to make your own unscented batch? It takes about 20 minutes and a hand mixer:

  1. Soften 1 cup of raw African shea butter at room temperature until a spoon pushes in easily.
  2. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of a light oil you already use, like coconut, olive or almond oil.
  3. Whip on medium for 5 minutes until pale and fluffy.
  4. Chill 10 minutes, then whip again for 2 minutes. Spoon into a clean, dry jar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between shea butter and whipped shea butter?

Whipped shea butter is shea butter blended with a little oil and whipped with air, so it's soft and spreads easily. Plain raw shea is firm and has nothing added. Both moisturize; whipped is simply easier to use every day.

What does whipped shea butter do?

It moisturizes and softens dry skin by helping hold water in, and it seals moisture into hair ends. It's a daily body cream, not a treatment for skin conditions.

Is baby powder whipped shea butter safe for babies?

"Baby powder" is the scent name. Because it contains fragrance, we suggest plain, unscented raw shea butter for babies, and checking with your pediatrician before using anything new on a baby's skin.

Can I use whipped shea butter on my face?

Many people do, but scented creams can bother sensitive facial skin. For the face, try a small amount of unscented raw shea at night, and test on a small spot first.

Why did my whipped shea butter melt or get hard?

Shea reacts to temperature. Heat softens it (chill 15 to 30 minutes to firm it up) and cold makes it stiff (keep it at room temperature and warm a scoop in your hands).

I have a tree nut allergy. Can I use shea butter?

Shea comes from a nut, but allergists report reactions to shea butter appear extremely rare, and a 2011 study found no allergy-triggering proteins in it.5 That isn't a guarantee, so ask your allergist if you have a serious nut allergy.

How long does an 8 oz jar last?

It depends on how much skin you cover, but a little goes a long way: start with a pea-size scoop per arm or leg. Packs of 2, 5 or 10 jars cost less per jar.

Where can I buy whipped shea butter near me?

At Yado Market, 1651 E 87th St in Chicago: pick up in store, local delivery, or shipping anywhere in the U.S.

For general information only. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, and whipped shea butter is a cosmetic, not a treatment for any condition. If you have a skin condition, a nut allergy, or are caring for a baby, check with your doctor first.
