Gino curry powder is the bright yellow, Nigerian-style curry that goes into almost every pot in a Nigerian kitchen. It's milder and more aromatic than Indian or Jamaican curry: it gives color and a warm, savory smell rather than heat. This is a single sachet, sized for one or two pots of food.

How Nigerians use curry powder

  • Boiling meat or chicken – with onion, salt, Maggi or Knorr, and dried thyme before you fry or add to stew
  • Jollof rice – a teaspoon of curry and thyme in the tomato base
  • Fried rice – the curry is what gives Nigerian fried rice its yellow color
  • Stews, sauces and pepper soup – a pinch for aroma
  • Coconut rice, beans and yam porridge

How much to use

Start with about 1 teaspoon for a family pot of rice or 1 kg of meat, and add more to taste. Add it early, while frying onions or boiling meat, so the flavor cooks in.

Cook with it

Frequently asked questions

Is Gino curry powder spicy?

Not very. Nigerian-style curry is used for color and aroma more than heat. Add pepper separately if you want it hot.

Is it the same as Jamaican curry powder?

No. Jamaican curry is darker and more turmeric- and allspice-forward and is used for curry goat and chicken. Gino is the lighter, yellow curry used in Nigerian rice and stews.

What goes with curry in Nigerian cooking?

Dried thyme. Curry and thyme go together in jollof, fried rice and boiled meat.

What size is it?

One sachet. Buy a few if you cook often.

What are the ingredients?

See the ingredient list printed on the sachet.
